2019 Abalone Fishing Closed

The state Fish and Game Commission voted to suspend the harvest of red abalone in 2019, shutting down the last viable abalone fishery in California for at least another year. The shutdown will be revisited at the end of 2019 to decide whether the fishery would be viable for sport hunters in 2020.

Strange Fish in Weird Places - Calif State University Monterey Bay

An influx of warmer water along the California coast has brought unprecedented sightings of marine organisms found outside their typical habitats and/or ranges. California Undersea Imagery Archive is initiating a crowd-sourcing effort to document the observations of organisms in new and unusual places, including movements north from Mexico into southern California and movements from southern California north of Point Conception. Divers can report observations by submitting an on-line form.
